IPNOSCOPE
The Ipnoscope Sleep Monitor

Monitor your sleep patterns, depth and quality of sleep

The Ipnoscope Sleep Monitor

The Ipnoscope is a new concept for sleep evaluation that was formulated for my senior thesis. It consists of a charging port, electronic wristband, and a pair of kaleidoscopic lenses that change quality based on one’s sleep vitals–movement & duration. It gives the user the ability to observe his/her sleep quality expressed through a changing kaleidoscopic view.

Eearly Developement
At the beginning of the semester, students were asked to choose a topic that would serve as the overarching theme for all the products designed in the course; the topic I chose was sleeping and dreaming. Once the topic was selected and researched, students were then required to produce 3 separate projects under 3 different approaches or “lenses”: a commercial lens, a critical lens, and a craft lens. The “commercial lens” generated a problem of poor sleep; my solution was an ASMR, a waterfall alarm clock. For the “critical lens,” which highlighted the problem of poor sleep, I designed a kinetic blanket with an H.R. Giger aesthetic. For the “craft lens,” I designed a process-inspired display monitor–a hybrid between a lava lamp and an hourglass–which showed both sleeping vitals and time. This process-inspired “craft lens” is the one I chose to further develop; it integrated all 3 lenses into the final product.

Exploded View of Ipnoscope
Components of the Ipnoscope provide the ability to review the users sleep patterns, depth and quality of sleep.

Lense 1
Lense 1: uses a lantern feature to reflect movement: restless sleep & frequent movement are shown with the color blue (which has adverse effects on sleep) while calm sleep is shown with the color orange (which is conducive for healthy sleep). This lens represents the “commercial approach.”

Ipnoscope
Wristband: uses two features–a start/stop timer and a motion censor.
Charging port is a stationary, electric charger which, by design, eliminates battery use and maintenance.

Lennse 2
Lense 2: uses a folding kaleidoscope mechanism which reflects duration (closes if 5-9 hours of sleep & opens if less than 5 or more than 9). This lens represents a “critical approach.”

STREAMLINED DESIGN
AND PERSONALIZED USES

A different kind of sleeping aid, aesthetically inspired with multiple uses.

The Ipnoscope takes an individual’s personal sleeping vitals and turns the lens (pun intended) on the user.

A metanarrative of my senior thesis designing experience. The research I compiled formed a looking glass into myself.
